Next, think about when you’re planning to host the party. Many themes are based on the weather, or on holidays that may take place around the time of the party. Is the bride getting married at the end of July?

Why not turn her bachelorette party into a Fourth of July barbecue? That’s an easy theme to plan. Ribs on the grill, ice cream, flags, and sparklers. Done. Is the wedding set for November? Try a Halloween theme party.

If you decide on a bachelorette party tied to a seasonal theme, here are a few tips:

• Find the right cookbook. Many cookbooks deal specifically with the season or holiday you’re working with. There are Christmas cookbooks, Halloween cookbooks, summer grilling-season cookbooks, and many more. It will be much easier to plan a menu using a book that’s actually in step with your theme than it will be to pick through a huge book full of all kinds of recipes.

• Shop early. Don’t wait until the week before your Valentine’s Day party to shop for decorations. All the best merchandise will be sold out, and you’ll be left cutting out construction-paper hearts for the next seven days solid.

• Find some music. Your party will be topped off when you have sounds of the season as background. For a party in the fall, try some bluegrass. For winter parties, try the traditional Christmas CD or some classical music. Summertime is the season of rock and roll. (You may have different tastes, but find a sound and keep the CD player going.)
